Problems this solves

A migration succeeds when customers, search engines and operations all retain continuity.

A Shopify migration has several connected workstreams: data, customer experience, search URLs and operations. This service establishes the overall transition plan. Platform-specific discovery then identifies the exports, business rules and replacements required for the source system you actually use. For example, an active store may keep receiving orders while a destination theme is being prepared. The plan needs a repeatable way to reconcile those changes, plus owners for URL mapping, customer communication and integrations. A rehearsal exposes missing relationships before they become launch-day surprises.

Deliverables

A clear scope. A usable handover.

Migration inventory

Identify records, content, business rules and operational dependencies that need a Shopify destination.

Data and URL mapping

Define transformations, exclusions and destination paths before running full imports.

Storefront and integration transition

Rebuild approved customer journeys and replace source-platform dependencies with suitable Shopify implementations.

Rehearsed cutover

Document final data changes, verification, release responsibilities and decisions for recovering from a failed launch.

Decisions before development

Make the cutover a sequence with clear stop conditions.

A practical planning example

A migration can use a rehearsal import, reconciliation, a planned change window, final data transfer and post-launch checks. The exact sequence depends on how the source store continues taking orders during the move.

Run a small trial migration before scheduling the full transfer. Include a complex product, an old URL and a record with incomplete data. Use those exceptions to refine the mapping and identify manual work before agreeing the final cutover window.

Reconcile record counts and selected field values after the rehearsal, then repeat the checks after the final transfer. Track any orders received during the transition and assign responsibility for resolving differences. Keep a record of excluded data and manual corrections so the merchant knows which historical information remains in the source system.

What to decide
Assign owners for source exports, product and customer mapping, URL redirects, payments and launch approval. Agree which discrepancies block release and how the team responds if a critical check fails.
What to verify
Compare record totals and representative details, test important old URLs and follow a new order through fulfillment. Historical data and account access need explicit transfer requirements, not assumptions.
What to receive at handover
Receive a source-to-Shopify mapping, exception register and redirect list. Keep launch reconciliation results with the cutover plan so your team can distinguish expected platform differences from missing data or issues that require follow-up.

Implementation checks

Clear decisions from brief to release.

  1. Inventory before rebuilding

Agree what must move, what can be archived and who owns each data source.

  2. Rehearse with representative records

Compare imported relationships and customer journeys against the source.

  3. Control the final transition

Reconcile changes since rehearsal and document launch approval and recovery decisions.

Service-specific FAQs

Before you start your Shopify project.

Get clarity on scope, cost, ownership and the way we work. Your store, its existing systems and the outcome you need shape the recommendation.

Start with your priorities
Share your Shopify store URL, the main problem to solve, your budget range and any launch date. Include the customer journeys that need attention, the apps you rely on and the tasks your team wants to manage more easily. These details help define a useful development brief.
Know what is included
Your proposal sets out the deliverables, responsibilities, review milestones and commercial terms before development starts. Confirm which theme templates, integrations and content updates are included, along with testing and handover. Shopify subscriptions, paid apps and ongoing support should be identified separately so you can compare the full project cost.
Plan beyond the launch
Agree who owns everyday editing, technical maintenance and future releases. Handover notes explain the delivered controls, outstanding dependencies and the support included in your scope.

Is migration just importing a product CSV?

No. A working transition can also involve customer access, historical records, URLs, payment providers and integrations. The inventory determines which of those workstreams the business requires.

Can every source record be transferred exactly?

Not necessarily. Data models differ, and some records or credentials cannot move through standard imports. Sample transfers establish the supported mapping and document exceptions before the full migration.

Will search traffic stay exactly the same?

That cannot be promised. Relevant redirects, retained content and technical checks reduce avoidable disruption, but search engines still need to process the changed site.

Can the old store continue trading during migration?

Often much of the preparation can happen while the source store remains available. The final transition still needs a plan for records changed after rehearsal and any operational freeze required. The exact approach depends on source access, import tooling and the systems handling orders.

How do you check that migrated data is complete?

We agree record counts, field mappings and sample relationships before import. Reconciliation checks compare the source and destination, while staff review representative products and customer journeys. Exceptions are recorded with an owner rather than treating a completed import job as proof of a complete migration.

What happens to existing URLs during a Shopify migration?

Important landing pages are inventoried and mapped to relevant destinations. The launch checklist includes approved redirects, internal links and destination page checks. Keep a record of intentionally retired content so monitoring can distinguish an expected removal from a missed migration item.
