Rule and API feasibility
Check that the target Function API exposes the inputs and actions needed for the requirement.
Run critical discount, delivery, payment, validation or cart logic predictably inside Shopify.
Shopify Functions projects begin with an explicit rule and expected result. We assess the applicable API, available input data and merchant configuration before implementation. This keeps the project focused on enforceable commerce behavior rather than assuming a Function can perform arbitrary server-side work. A discount requirement, for example, needs examples covering eligible and excluded products, mixed carts and overlapping promotions. The merchant also needs clear settings for maintaining the rule. We use those scenarios to evaluate feasibility and document the expected outputs before writing the implementation.
Check that the target Function API exposes the inputs and actions needed for the requirement.
Define merchant-controlled settings and representative inputs with expected results before coding.
Build the scoped rule within the chosen API and distribution model, including predictable handling of missing data.
Record configuration ownership, test fixtures and the checks needed when business rules or dependencies change.
For a quantity-based discount, the brief must define eligible lines, quantity thresholds, exclusions and the intended discount result. A cart total alone may not represent the business rule correctly.
For a three-item promotion, specify whether the threshold counts all units or only eligible products. Compare carts containing excluded items, multiple eligible lines and another discount. Write the expected result for each case before implementation. Merchants should receive guidance on configuring the supported rule and checking that a later promotional change produces the intended totals.

Check exclusions, missing data and combinations with other active customizations.
Keep merchant settings and developer-owned logic clearly distinguished.

Read verified reviewsNo. A Function applies supported backend commerce logic; a UI extension presents an interface on an allowed surface. Some projects need both, but they are scoped and tested separately.
Do not assume it can. Network access and available data depend on the specific Function API and eligibility. Feasibility is confirmed before a real-time external dependency is included.
Custom app and public app distribution have different plan eligibility. The store plan and intended distribution are checked before selecting a custom implementation.
Supply the business rule in plain language, examples of valid and invalid carts, and the result expected in each case. Identify the product or customer data the rule depends on. Those examples help confirm the relevant API and expose ambiguity before development starts.
We build a scenario set around the actual combinations the store uses, including exclusions, changed quantities and overlapping behavior. Each result is compared with the approved rule. Integration testing matters because individually valid extensions can still create an unexpected combined customer experience.
Merchant controls can be included for the agreed configurable inputs, subject to the implementation. Handover should distinguish a supported setting change from a change to the underlying logic. Include example checks so a promotion update can be reviewed before customers depend on it.
