Problems this solves

Platform parity is less important than preserving the rules the business relies on.

A BigCommerce migration needs more than matching product titles and images. Option rules, customer groups and category structures can drive how the business sells. We document those requirements and test representative mappings so the Shopify store supports the intended operation rather than only resembling the previous site. Choose sample products with the most demanding options and customer groups before importing the easier records. We review the order information those choices produce and the staff controls needed to maintain them. This exposes gaps between source behavior and destination configuration while the mapping is still inexpensive to revise.

Deliverables

A clear scope. A usable handover.

BigCommerce requirement inventory

Identify option and modifier behavior, category organization and account rules that affect the Shopify implementation.

Destination catalog model

Map products, variants, collections and required attributes using representative complex items.

Experience and system transition

Rebuild the approved storefront and review app or integration replacements against actual operating needs.

Import and launch reconciliation

Check record counts, relationships, important URLs and changes made after the migration rehearsal.

Decisions before development

Distinguish stock variants from product modifiers.

A practical planning example

A BigCommerce product can contain selectable variants and modifiers such as a personalization field. They should not automatically become the same type of Shopify option because they may represent different pricing and inventory behavior.

Take one product with a size variant and an engraving modifier. Record which selection changes inventory, which changes price and which is only an instruction. Build the destination model from those distinctions, then compare the cart and order output. Include old product URLs and incomplete source data in the rehearsal so exceptions can be resolved before transferring the full catalog.

What to decide
Map each selection to its destination and record whether it changes SKU, price or fulfillment instructions. Include category structure, customer requirements and URL patterns in the migration specification.
What to verify
Verify representative modifier and variant combinations in the cart and order. Reconcile stock and prices, test important redirects and review any source feature that needs an app or custom implementation.
What to receive at handover
Receive an inventory of migrated BigCommerce data, rebuilt storefront behavior and remaining exceptions. Document option and variant mapping, redirect coverage and representative order checks so the Shopify launch can be reviewed against the agreed migration scope.
Translate the BigCommerce catalog. Diagram labels: Source options, Target structure, Connected systems, Cutover review.
Implementation checks

Clear decisions from brief to release.

  1. Model complex source products

Resolve options and pricing before choosing the import format.

  2. Validate business-rule replacements

Test customer groups and integrations against agreed Shopify behavior.

  3. Reconcile the store transition

Review URLs, final data changes and the launch-critical order flow.

Service-specific FAQs

Before you start your Shopify project.

Get clarity on scope, cost, ownership and the way we work. Your store, its existing systems and the outcome you need shape the recommendation.

Start with your priorities
Share your Shopify store URL, the main problem to solve, your budget range and any launch date. Include the customer journeys that need attention, the apps you rely on and the tasks your team wants to manage more easily. These details help define a useful development brief.
Know what is included
Your proposal sets out the deliverables, responsibilities, review milestones and commercial terms before development starts. Confirm which theme templates, integrations and content updates are included, along with testing and handover. Shopify subscriptions, paid apps and ongoing support should be identified separately so you can compare the full project cost.
Plan beyond the launch
Agree who owns everyday editing, technical maintenance and future releases. Handover notes explain the delivered controls, outstanding dependencies and the support included in your scope.

Do BigCommerce categories become Shopify collections automatically?

A migration method can map data, but the desired collection structure and navigation still need review. Category hierarchy and merchandising requirements should guide the destination model.

How are product modifiers handled?

Each modifier is assessed for its effect on price, inventory and fulfillment. Some choices fit variants or additional order information; others need a supported app or custom configuration model.

Can customer group pricing move unchanged?

The intended pricing and access rules must be checked against the selected Shopify plan and apps. Source labels alone do not establish equivalent destination behavior.

How do you review BigCommerce product options before migration?

For each important option, identify whether it changes the item being fulfilled, its price, availability or only supporting information. We test the proposed Shopify representation using sample products and orders. That decision is more reliable than copying option labels without their operational meaning.

Can the existing store design be retained on Shopify?

The visual direction and useful content can inform the destination, but templates and interactions need a Shopify implementation. We identify the components worth preserving and the changes required by the selected theme or apps. Approved designs should be reviewed with the migrated catalog before launch.

What is included in BigCommerce migration reconciliation?

The checklist compares agreed record counts, critical fields, product relationships and important URLs. Staff review sample customer journeys and order outputs as well as imported data. Any unsupported source behavior should have an approved alternative or a clearly recorded exclusion before cutover.
