Check whether a retired Discounts Allocator extension can block your Shopify app deployment, and separate that cleanup from discount-rule redesign.

An obsolete preview extension can prevent unrelated app changes from deploying. The first task is to establish whether the retired target exists in your app.

Shopify published Discounts Allocator Function API developer preview has ended on 10 September 2026.

Which apps need action?

Shopify has closed the Discounts Allocator preview and will not release that API. Preview functions have been unregistered. Apps that never used it are unaffected.

An app that still declares purchase.discounts-allocator.run must remove that extension from its configuration. Until then, its next shopify app deploy fails for the entire app. Existing releases remain installable, although their allocator functions no longer run. Shopify points developers creating function-based discounts to the Discount Function API; allocation remains controlled by the platform.

Separate deployment cleanup from promotion design

Vivek Codes’ implementation advice:

  • Have the app maintainer inventory extension targets and identify the exact obsolete entry. Record which release contains the cleanup so another developer does not accidentally restore it from an older branch.
  • If a promotion depended on the preview, describe its intended cart behaviour with concrete examples before choosing a replacement. Review mixed items, quantities and combined promotions with the merchant; a successful redeployment does not establish that a business rule still behaves as intended.
