The main integration risk is incomplete identifier data: a reader using only the old barcode field cannot see a variant’s additional identifiers.

Shopify published Variants now support multiple barcodes on 8 September 2026.

Read the set, and take care when writing it

Shopify’s 2026-10 announcement introduces ProductVariant.barcodes and corresponding write inputs. A variant can hold up to 20 identifiers, with optional type validation. Writing the new barcodes input replaces the whole set; sending the old and new inputs together is invalid.

The deprecated barcode field remains available and returns the first entry. Its removal date has not been announced. Existing readers therefore continue to work but can silently miss additional identifiers. Shopify recommends moving identifier-sync reads to the new connection.

Audit identifier ownership before changing a sync

Vivek Codes’ implementation advice:

  • Choose a representative product with supplier and marketplace identifiers. Trace which system owns each value, then compare the inbound and outbound records at every integration boundary. A successful request alone is not proof that the complete set survived.
  • Decide which identifier should remain first for downstream systems still using the legacy field. Add a test that updates one identifier while retaining the others, and review replacement writes before rolling the change across the catalogue.
